The use effective R. japonicum strains not always increases grain yield because many factors can depress nodulation and thus, N2 fixation. Among such factors, competitiveness for nodule sites and the strain ability to persist in the soil can be crucial for the sucess of inoculation. To accomplish these characteristics a series of six experiments was conducted in green house with Leonard jars and pots with soil. In sand, there was a marked difference among strains in N2-fixing ability on Bragg, IAC-2, and Oriente cultivars. Strains INPA 031 and SEMIA 5021 showed infectivity problems. Almost all strains introduced in soil with low rhizobial population occured in high percentage of the nodules. However, in soils with established population only highly competitive strains such as INPA 037, SEMIA 587, and SEMIA 5019 increased their occurence in the nodules. The use of multi-strain inoculant resulted in lower occurence of the strains in the nodules compared to single-strain inoculants. Soil colonization and survival favored the strain occurence in the nodules even when a highly competitive strain was reintroduced. These results indicate that strains with good survival and colonizing as well as competitive for nodule sites present better possibilities to overcome the rhizobial soil population in nodule formation.
